The Complete Guide to Compostable Packaging for Food Businesses

Compostable Packaging: What Every Australian Food Business Needs to Know

The shift to compostable packaging in Australia's food service industry is no longer a trend โ€” it's a regulatory reality and a customer expectation. But navigating the options, certifications, costs and supplier landscape can be genuinely confusing.

This guide cuts through the noise and gives you a clear, practical framework for choosing and sourcing compostable packaging in Australia โ€” whether you run a single cafe or a multi-site food operation.

What Does "Compostable" Actually Mean?

The word "compostable" is used loosely in marketing, but it has a specific technical meaning. Genuinely compostable packaging must:

  • Break down into non-toxic components within a defined timeframe
  • Leave no microplastics or harmful residues
  • Support plant growth in the resulting compost

There are two tiers of compostability:

  • Home compostable: Breaks down in a backyard compost heap within 6โ€“12 months. Higher standard, increasingly preferred by councils.
  • Industrially compostable: Requires commercial composting facility conditions (high heat, controlled moisture). Much more common โ€” most "compostable" packaging falls into this category.

In practice, industrially compostable packaging that ends up in landfill (rather than a composting facility) won't break down meaningfully. This is a genuine limitation worth communicating honestly to customers.

Key Certifications to Look For

When assessing packaging claims, these certifications matter:

  • AS 4736-2006: Australian standard for industrially compostable packaging โ€” the most relevant local certification
  • AS 5810-2010: Australian standard for home compostable packaging
  • EN 13432 (Europe) / ASTM D6400 (USA): Internationally recognised industrial compostability standards; widely accepted in Australia
  • ABA Certified (Australasian Bioplastics Association): Australian-administered certification scheme using the above standards

If a supplier can't point you to a certification, treat the claim with scepticism.

The Main Product Categories

Cutlery

Wooden and bamboo cutlery are genuinely home compostable. CPLA cutlery is industrially compostable. Both are compliant replacements for banned single-use plastic cutlery.

Straws

Paper straws are the dominant compliant option โ€” compostable and widely available. Bamboo straws work for dine-in settings. Avoid "biodegradable" plastic straws that aren't certified compostable โ€” these may still be banned under state legislation.

Containers and Boxes

Bagasse (sugarcane pulp) containers are the workhorse of eco takeaway packaging โ€” microwave-safe, grease-resistant and genuinely compostable. Kraft paper boxes work well for drier foods. PLA containers are good for cold applications.

Bags

Compostable carry bags (made from PBAT/PLA blends or cornstarch) are a compliant replacement for single-use plastic bags, which are banned in all Australian states. They look and feel similar to conventional plastic bags but break down in industrial composting.

Cups and Lids

Coffee cups with PLA lining are compostable (but note: many standard paper cups have a polyethylene lining that is NOT compostable). Double-wall paper cups avoid the lining issue. Lids are the harder problem โ€” most compostable lids are PLA and require industrial composting.

State-by-State Compliance: A Quick Reference

Australia's patchwork of state legislation can be hard to follow. As a general guide:

  • Single-use plastic cutlery, straws, stirrers and cotton buds: Banned in all states and territories
  • EPS (styrofoam) food containers and cups: Banned in most states
  • Plastic bags: Banned in all states
  • Single-use plastic plates and bowls: Banned or phasing out in several states

Always check your specific state's current ban list โ€” legislation is still evolving, and penalties apply.

The Business Case Beyond Compliance

Beyond legal requirements, there's a genuine commercial reason to invest in compostable packaging:

  • Customer preference: Australian consumers โ€” particularly under-40s โ€” actively favour businesses using sustainable packaging
  • Review and social media impact: Eco packaging photographs better and generates positive social mentions
  • Staff morale: Many food service workers prefer working for businesses aligned with their values
  • Tender requirements: Corporate catering, government and university contracts increasingly mandate compliant packaging
