What Does "Compostable" Actually Mean?
The word "compostable" is used loosely in marketing, but it has a specific technical meaning. Genuinely compostable packaging must:
- Break down into non-toxic components within a defined timeframe
- Leave no microplastics or harmful residues
- Support plant growth in the resulting compost
There are two tiers of compostability:
- Home compostable: Breaks down in a backyard compost heap within 6–12 months. Higher standard, increasingly preferred by councils.
- Industrially compostable: Requires commercial composting facility conditions (high heat, controlled moisture). Much more common — most "compostable" packaging falls into this category.
In practice, industrially compostable packaging that ends up in landfill (rather than a composting facility) won't break down meaningfully. This is a genuine limitation worth communicating honestly to customers.
Key Certifications to Look For
When assessing packaging claims, these certifications matter:
- AS 4736-2006: Australian standard for industrially compostable packaging — the most relevant local certification
- AS 5810-2010: Australian standard for home compostable packaging
- EN 13432 (Europe) / ASTM D6400 (USA): Internationally recognised industrial compostability standards; widely accepted in Australia

Coffee cups with PLA lining are compostable (but note: many standard paper cups have a polyethylene lining that is NOT compostable). Double-wall paper cups avoid the lining issue. Lids are the harder problem — most compostable lids are PLA and require industrial composting.
