PLA Cups vs Paper Cups: Which Is Better for Your Business?

The Cup Decision That's Costing Cafes More Than They Realise

A busy Sydney café serving 300 coffees a day will go through roughly 110,000 disposable cups a year. Choose the wrong cup format and you're not just making an environmental misstep — you could be non-compliant with state regulations, turning off eco-conscious customers, or quietly haemorrhaging money on a product that isn't fit for purpose. The PLA cup vs paper cup debate sounds like a niche packaging question. It's actually a core business decision.

Both are marketed as eco-friendly alternatives to traditional plastic-lined cups. Both look similar on a shelf. But they behave very differently in service, in composting facilities, and on your bottom line. Here's what the labels don't tell you.

What Are PLA Cups and Paper Cups, Really?

Understanding the materials matters before you can make a sensible choice for your operation.

PLA cups are made from polylactic acid — a bioplastic derived from fermented plant starch, typically corn or sugarcane. They're fully transparent, which gives them a clean, premium look often used for cold drinks, smoothies, and iced coffees. PLA is certified compostable under the Australian Standard AS 4736 or AS 5810, meaning it breaks down under specific industrial composting conditions — not in your backyard bin, and not in landfill.

Paper cups — the eco-friendly kind — are made from FSC-certified paperboard lined with a thin layer of PLA or aqueous coating instead of the traditional polyethylene (PE) plastic film. This distinction is critical. A PE-lined paper cup is neither recyclable nor compostable. A PLA-lined or aqueous-coated paper cup can be industrially composted and, in some formats, recycled. Always check the lining before assuming a paper cup is actually sustainable.

Both materials can carry certifications from bodies like the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA) or global certifiers like TÜV Austria (OK Compost). If a cup doesn't carry one of these marks, treat its eco claims with scepticism.

Heat Tolerance, Functionality, and Practical Performance

This is where the two formats diverge most sharply — and where cafés most often make costly mistakes.

PLA cups are cold-only. PLA begins to soften and distort at temperatures above approximately 40–45°C. Pour a flat white into a standard PLA cup and you'll have a deformed, leaking mess within minutes. PLA cups are purpose-built for cold beverages: iced lattes, smoothies, juices, bubble tea, and cold-pressed juice. They're excellent in that role — crystal-clear, rigid, and aesthetically impressive. But they are genuinely not suitable for hot drinks, full stop.

Paper cups handle heat reliably. A standard single-wall paper cup manages temperatures up to around 90°C comfortably, while double-wall paper cups add insulation that keeps hot drinks warmer longer and protects the customer's hand without a sleeve. For hot beverages, paper cups are the clear functional winner.

Lids matter too. PLA cups typically pair with PLA flat lids or PLA dome lids. Paper hot cups use paper or PLA lids designed to seat snugly on the rolled rim. Mixing lid types across cup formats is a common source of leaks and customer complaints — make sure you're ordering matched sets.
